Valerie Honnart

Originally a painter, I have lived and exhibited in China and Italy, and am now based in France. I trained in engraving in Rome with Maria-Pina Bentivenga and in Paris, where engraving was initially a way of integrating poetry into small artists' books. I love collaborating with writers, and I did the engravings for an artist's book with the poet Bernard Fournier. I find in etching, and particularly in the sugar technique, an expression close to that of ink tracing with Chinese brushes. I like to work in series and by theme: the ties we weave, trees and our roots, telluric energy and our destructions, the patience of stones... This long time spent on zinc or copper plates is like the furrow of a thousand stories heard, whispered, passed on from the different places I've lived or passed through.
